Easily separate black plastics

The company Elektro Recycling, the largest Slovakian electronics scrap recycler, has recently started up a large line to process mixed plastics from electronics scrap. The core of the line is an electrostatic separation line from hamos for plastic separation: after several pre-treatment stages such as shredding, removal of foreign particles and float-and-sink separation, the hamos KRS electrostatic plastics recycling line is used for production of high grade ABS and PS recyclate.  

Reusable plastics with electrostatic separation

An upstream float-and-sink line separates all undesired plastics, including flame retardant materials, producing a mixture of ABS and PS as a good fraction. The hamos KRS downstream electrostatic separation line then separates this plastic mixture into individual pure ABS and PS fractions.

Peter Matula, Plant Manager at Elektro Recycling says of this: “With our electrostatic separation line, we now produce clean PS and ABS fractions, which we then compound. Our end customers are enthusiastic about the high quality of our ABS and PS granulates. It is very important for us that we can also easily separate black plastics”.

At Elektro Recycling, the mixed ground material with particle size < 10 mm is separated in a 2-stage electrostatic separation process. Clean ABS is produced in the first stage, clean PS in the second stage. It has also been managed to separate out even undesired PP content. Elektro Recycling processes around 3 tonnes per hour in the plastics recycling line into high-grade regranulate.  

Separation of black plastics

Mixed plastics from electronics scrap consist of 60 – 80 % black plastics. For this reason, sorting processes such as near infrared are of limited use in processing such mixtures. Only a small percentage of good product can be separated with these other processes, while the main proportion cannot be separated, on account of the black colour.

The ideal processing method for electronic scrap plastics is therefore electrostatic separation, as electrostatic separators work irrespective of colour, specific gravity and shape of the particles.  

Operating principle of electrostatic separation

A so-called tribo-electric process is used in electrostatic separation of mixed plastics. The different plastics become differently charged through intensive particle contact in a special electric charging unit – one plastic acquires a positive charge, another plastic a negative charge. The plastics can be subsequently separated into individual fractions with the aid of high voltage electrodes.
